Rice is Bangladesh's staple food crop and the backbone of the rural economy. Most households rely on rice as their main daily carbohydrate.
Three main seasons are cultivated: Aus, Aman, and Boro. Boro yields are usually highest due to irrigated, high-yielding varieties.
Growing in brief:
Seedlings are raised in nurseries and transplanted. Water management, balanced fertilizer, and pest control strongly affect yield. BRRI and hybrid varieties are widely used.
Why it matters:
Rice underpins national food security and rural employment. In integrated farming, rice straw becomes livestock feed and organic matter — closing the farm cycle.
