Native vs. Foreign Breed: Which is More Profitable for You
One of the most important decisions when starting a new farm is whether to raise native or foreign (hybrid) cattle. Both have their own advantages and disadvantages. Today's article provides a realistic comparison so that you can make the right decision according to your situation.
Advantages of indigenous breeds
Higher disease resistance — Native cows do not get sick easily because they have adapted to the local climate and environment for many years
Lower feed cost — They do well on simple grass, hay, and low-grain diets
Easy maintenance — Less investment is required in housing and care
Milk quality — Many believe that indigenous cow milk contains a higher amount of A2 beta-casein protein, which is in demand among health-conscious consumers
Limitations of indigenous breeds
Milk production is relatively low (usually 2-4 liters per day)
Less suitable for commercial meat production due to low meat yield
Advantages of foreign and hybrid breeds
Cows of Holstein Friesian, Jersey, or Shahiwal hybrid breeds are known for high milk production.
Can give up to 15-25 liters of milk daily (with proper care)
Grows weight quickly, so it is profitable for meat production
More suitable for commercial dairy farms
Limitations of foreign breeds
Suffers easily from heat stress in the hot and humid climate of Bangladesh
Immunity to disease is relatively low, requires regular vaccination and treatment
High demand for granular feed, resulting in significant increase in feed costs
Without improved management (fans, shaded houses, regular health checks), production decreases
Which one to choose in which situation
Local breeds are suitable when:
Starting a small farm
Does not want to take additional investment or risk
Raising for family food needs or selling in the local market
Hybrid/foreign breeds are suitable when:
Want to do commercial dairy business
Able to provide improved management (regular veterinarian, suitable shed, electricity system)
A market for selling milk on a large scale is assured
Intermediate solution: Hybrid Breeds
Many experienced farmers choose hybrid breeds between indigenous and foreign breeds — such as the Shahiwal-Friesian cross. This provides some of the advantages of both the disease resistance of the indigenous breed and the high milk production capacity of the foreign breed.
Finally
No breed is equally profitable for everyone — it depends on your investment capacity, management skills and market conditions. The advice for new farmers is to start with indigenous or hybrid breeds and gradually move on to improved breeds after gaining experience.
