Pregnancy Care for Cows: Things to Do from Start to Finish

Pregnancy Care for Cows: Things to Do from Start to Finish If proper care is not taken during pregnancy, both healthy birth and milk production can be disrupted. Pregnancy requires step-by-step care during the approximately 280 days (9 months and 10 days) of pregnancy. This article discusses the things to do at each stage of pregnancy. Confirming Pregnancy If the cow does not come into heat again 21 days after breeding, then there is a possibility of pregnancy. To be sure, it is better to get tested by a veterinarian after 45-60 days. First three months (early stage) This is the time when the important organs of the fetus are formed, so the most caution is required. Excessive exercise or running should be avoided. Sudden changes in diet should be avoided. Stress (excessive heat, crowding) should be reduced. Middle stage (fourth to sixth month) During this period, the cow can function normally, but the amount of nutrients in the diet should be increased. Increase the amount of protein and minerals in a balanced diet. Ensure regular supply of clean water. Schedule deworming according to the advice of the veterinarian (some drugs are prohibited during pregnancy). Last three months (the most important period) The weight of the fetus increases rapidly during this period, so the need for food is also highest. The "steaming up" method can be followed by gradually increasing the amount of granular feed, so that milk production after delivery is good. Cows should be kept in a separate, clean and quiet place for 2-3 weeks before delivery. It is important to watch out for signs of delivery such as swollen abdomen, softening of the vulva. Warning signs of pregnancy. If any of the following signs are observed, veterinary advice should be sought immediately:. Abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge. Sudden cessation of eating. Excessive weakness or inability to stand. Premature onset of labor pains. Preparation for delivery. Keep a clean, dry and soft bedding area ready. Keep necessary equipment (clean cloth, gloves, iodine) handy. Normal delivery should usually not take more than 2-3 hours. If it takes longer, seek medical help immediately. Postpartum care. It is very important to feed the newborn baby colostrum within the first hour of birth. This builds immunity. The cow should be given a chance to recover by giving her lukewarm water and easily digestible food. Lastly Proper care during pregnancy not only ensures the delivery of a healthy calf, but also strengthens the subsequent milk production cycle. Regular monitoring and, if necessary, seeking veterinary advice is the safest way.
