Things to remember when building a cowshed
6/21/2026
A large part of the success of raising cows depends on the proper planning of the cowshed. I am sharing what I kept in mind while building the cowshed on our farm.
Location selection
The cowshed should be built in a place where water does not accumulate and there is good ventilation. Building it on high ground can avoid the problem of waterlogging during the rainy season.
Size and space allocation
It is important to have enough space for each cow so that they can stand and sit comfortably. Overcrowding increases the risk of disease spread and creates mental stress for the cows.
Lighting and ventilation system
It is important to have adequate natural light and ventilation system. A dark, damp environment becomes suitable for diseases and germs.
Water and waste management
There should be an easy system of clean water and a convenient drain for removing dung and waste. This waste is later used as organic fertilizer, so it is good to plan its collection system.
Flooring Material
The floor should be easy to clean and non-slip, so that the cows do not fall and get hurt.
Our Experience
We have found it more effective to build a small-scale cowshed initially and gradually expand it as needed, rather than making a large investment all at once.
