Bamboo

Bamboo is deeply woven into the fabric of rural Bengali life — used in everything from house construction and fencing to furniture and handicrafts. Because it grows so quickly, it's often referred to as "green gold." Environmental role: Bamboo groves help prevent soil erosion and are highly effective at carbon absorption, playing an important role in environmental conservation. They also provide shelter for many birds and small animals. Cultivation in brief: Bamboo can grow in almost any soil with minimal care and spreads rapidly. It becomes harvestable within 3–4 years of planting, and once a grove is established, it continues producing new bamboo for years. Economic importance: With low investment and quick, recurring returns, bamboo plays a significant role in the rural economy — demand for it remains steady across construction, handicrafts, and beyond.
