Season: Best planted during monsoonRegion: Northern Bangladesh, char/riverbank areas along the Jamuna and PadmaUses: Furniture, boat-making, fuelwood
Sissoo is a fast-growing timber tree widely planted especially in riverside char lands and flood-prone areas. Its sturdy wood is used for furniture and boat-making, and thanks to its rapid growth, it yields profitable returns in a relatively short time.
Environmental role:
Sissoo's strong root system plays an important role in preventing riverbank erosion and char land degradation, which is why it's widely used to protect embankments and riverbanks.
Cultivation in brief:
Sissoo grows well in sandy-loam and char soil. It becomes ready for timber harvest within 10–12 years of planting, considerably faster than mahogany.
Economic importance:
For farmers in char areas, sissoo is an important income source, especially on land where conventional crops don't grow well — planting this tree allows for long-term profit from otherwise less productive land.
