Correct time and method of mustard cultivation
6/21/2026
Our family has been cultivating mustard in Raiganj, Sirajganj for years. In this article, we are sharing the entire process of mustard cultivation, which we ourselves follow. When is the right time? Mustard is a Rabi crop, meaning a winter crop. The most suitable time to sow seeds is from the middle of the month of Kartik to the beginning of Agrahayan (late October to mid-November). Sowing before or after this time reduces the yield, because mustard requires a certain temperature for flowering. Land preparation For mustard cultivation, the land has to be well cultivated and leveled with a ladder. Water should not stagnate in the land, because mustard plants cannot tolerate waterlogging. We usually cultivate the soil 3-4 times to loosen it. Seed sowing and fertilizer management Usually one and a half to two kg of seeds are required per bigha. Before sowing the seeds, rotted cow dung manure and the required amount of chemical fertilizers (urea, TSP, MOP) have to be mixed in the land. We try to use as much organic fertilizer as possible, so that the soil health is good. Care: The first irrigation is given 15-20 days after sowing the seeds. Irrigation is most important during flowering and grain setting. If there is a lack of water during this time, the yield decreases. Harvesting: Mustard ripens within 80-90 days of sowing. When the leaves and fruits of the plant turn yellow-brown and the seeds become hard, it is the right time to harvest. If you delay, there is a risk of the fruits bursting and the seeds falling out. This is the method used to cultivate mustard on our farm, from which we later make pure cold-pressed mustard oil and mustard flower honey.
