The role of organic fertilizers in increasing soil fertility — Our farm experience

6/21/2026

Cultivating the same land for a long time reduces soil fertility. On our farm, we try to solve this problem by using organic fertilizers. I am sharing how we do it. Why organic fertilizers are important Chemical fertilizers give quick results, but in the long run they can reduce soil structure and natural beneficial microbes. Organic fertilizers work slowly, but keep the soil healthy in the long run. What we use Cow dung - The dung from our livestock is decomposed into compost fertilizer, which is applied to the land before cultivation. Poultry manure - This is also used as fertilizer, especially in vegetable fields. Crop residues - Rice straw, mustard plant residues are decomposed and returned to the land. Thus, in our integrated farming system, the waste of one benefits the other - this is the main idea of integrated farming. What are the results? Using organic fertilizers keeps the soil loose, increases its water retention capacity and reduces the dependence on chemical fertilizers in the long run. In our experience, it also improves the taste and quality of the crop. Advice for new farmers It can be difficult to stop chemical fertilizers completely suddenly, there is a risk of yield loss. Rather, it is a realistic way to gradually increase the amount of organic fertilizers and reduce the amount of chemical fertilizers.
